Our Guide To The Best Four Wheel Drive Tracks On The Eyre Peninsula

 

South Australia is renowned for its iconic outback regions such as the Flinders Ranges and Simpson Desert. But there is more to SA as it has some spectacular coastal areas such as the Eyre Peninsula which has some of the best camping and coastal scenery anywhere in Australia.

The Eyre Peninsula is definitely a region of contrasts – you’ve heard of the spectacular coastline, but the Eyre Peninsula also has stunning wild outback landscapes just a few hours north.


Gawler Ranges

The Gawler Ranges offer plenty of opportunities to get into 4WD mode, you can choose your route depending on your skills level. Kimba, Wudinna, Minnipa and Wirrulla are all gateways to this spectacular national park, where you’re guaranteed to spot plenty of wildlife.

The spectacular Pildappa Rock with its wave-formation is a Eyre Peninsula icon located in the Gawler Ranges. You can have all this and more only 3 hour drive from The Blue Seas Motel through some absolutley stunning country.

Port Lincoln National Park

You can’t mention 4WD on the Eyre Peninsula without considering some of the amazing drive-on beaches. From Walker’s Rocks near Elliston, which is kilometres of sandy white beach to Scott’s Beach in the far west near Fowler’s Bay and the Gunyah Beach 4WD Track in the Coffin Bay National Park, there’s plenty to choose from.

There are several beaches along the Eyre Peninsula which offer a true four-wheel drive experience. Port Lincoln National Park is only half an hour's drive from Blue Seas Motel. It's here you'll find the fabulous Sleaford–Wanna sand dune system which is recommended for experienced four-wheel drivers only.

Darke Peake

Tackling the ranges of Darke Peake near the township of Cleve is a 4WD must do.

The Dark Peake range boasts the highest point on the Eyre Peninsula, Carappee Hill (489m above sea level), which also has a variety of bush trails and areas to camp.

Darke Peake gets progressively more difficult as you get further into the track, we recommend vehicles with clearance! The Track follows the ridge line and offers some spectacular views of surrounding countryside. The track eventually makes its way down the hill and ends up in a quarry.

Googs Track

Googs Track runs west from Ceduna all the way to Glendambo with more than 300 sand dunes along the way making it an excellent 4WD experience.

The Googs Track is 353km long in total with lots to see along the way.

The best time to explore this beautiful place is in the cooler months, we recommend traveling from north to south and allowing for time to explore along the way.

It’s a real off-road experience on the Eyre Peninsula!

Fitzgerald National Park

Fitzgerald National Park four wheel drive tracks are easy tracks to negotiate. There are plenty of camping areas near the Hammersley inlet and the eastern entry of the park.

Moirs Track is an easy forestry track, there is bitumen rd access to Hamersley Inlet now. This track will take you through the Hammersley sand dunes to the beach. It is easier if you let your tyres down as it can be soft in spots. There are a series of posts that will define a path for you to follow.

The Eyre Peninsular also has some great fishing locations, Fitzgerald Bay on the Eyre Peninsular has easy beach access.
